MPEG Video and ATM Network Cell Loss: Analysis and Experimentation
نویسنده
چکیده
The goal of this paper is to evaluate the effect of ATM network cell loss on the playback quality of transmitted MPEG video. The MPEG format and its susceptibility to data corruption is analyzed to calculate a theoretical statistical data corruption per cell loss measure. Experiments are run using an ATM network simulator with actual MPEG video to measure the effect of cell loss rate and burstiness of losses on resulting playback picture quality. Empirical results of visual information loss rates are presented, and a Human Factors study evaluates viewers’ subjective satisfaction of resulting picture quality. Results indicate that video quality degrades rapidly as cell loss rate increases, and a 0.1% loss rate provides an effective cut-off point of playback acceptability.

متن کاملPerceptual Quality Metric as a Performance Tool for ATM Adaptation of MPEG-2 based Multimedia Applications
In this paper we study the perceptual impact of data loss on MPEG-2 video coded streams transmitted over an ATM network. This impact is measured using a perceptual qualitymetric based on a spatio-temporal model of the human visual system. Video streams have been transmitted on top of both new network and ATM adaptation layers which provide a robust transmission by applying per-cell sequence num...
متن کاملReliable Transmission of MPEG-2 VBR Video Streams over New Network Adaptation and ATM Adaptation Layers
This paper adresses the transmission of VBR MPEG-2 video streams on top of both Network Adaptation (NAL) and ATM Adaptation Layers (AAL) [1] for real-time multimedia applications. The NAL, speci c to MPEG-2, provides a selective data protection mechanism based on syntactic criteria. The AAL provides a reliable transmission by applying per-cell sequence numbering combined with a selective Forwar...
متن کاملImpact of ATM traffic control on MPEG-2 video quality
In this paper, a performance study of controlled MPEG-2 video traffic over an ATM network is presented. ATM networks are able to support variable bit rate (VBR) video sources. However, to implement QoS contract enforcement, traffic policers such as a Leaky Bucket need to be incorporated in order to change the VBR characteristics of a video stream. Our study investigates the video quality achiev...
